Reading Buddies

James Island Baptist Church partners with Murray LaSaine Elementary School to provide reading buddies to children in need. A reading buddy is a parent, or a volunteer, who gives their time to help children develop their reading skills. A reading buddy takes an interest in the child and works with them on a weekly basis so that they can develop a good relationship. These weekly sessions can make a huge difference in a child’s life.

James Island Outreach

James Island Outreach

James Island Outreach was created out of the emergency resulting from Hurricane Hugo in September of 1989. James Island Outreach was the result of community churches coming together to help those who had nowhere else to turn.

With the substantial alleviation of housing emergencies in the years following Hugo, the focus of the Outreach changed from coordinating home repairs to providing and coordinating a variety of human services for our neighbors on James Island and Folly Beach. Today 17 local churches support James island Outreach operations.

In coordination with the public and private human service agencies, James Island Outreach, through volunteers and a paid, part-time professional director, provides crisis relief and on-going assistance in the areas of:

Emergency food and medicines,
Utility and rent assistance,
Individual and family counseling,
Information and referral, and
Case Management.
Their motto: “Let no child go to bed hungry on our island.” James Island Outreach seeks donations of canned and packaged food donations as well as fresh and refrigerated foods. Hours of operation are Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday from 9:30 AM – 11:30 AM on the grounds of Bethany United Methodist Church. Other hours are covered by appointment.
